Business Overview
AirGenuity, Inc. (www.airgenuity.ca) is in the energy conservation business in laboratory ventilation systems. Through innovative air contamination technology, we can reduce the dilution component of laboratory ventilation systems, resulting in simple payback in between less than a year to 3-5 years.
Our showpiece retrofit is the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Tower at the MaRS complex in Toronto, where we saved the owner about $1 million annually with a payback of 2.5 years.
We have been in business since 2000, starting as a business unit of a company that has been in a similar business since 1975. Servicing all of southern Ontario, we are located in Etobicoke.
Our Target Markets
Our customers are those who own or operate a traditional laboratory with fume hoods, including colleges and universities, all levels of government, and the healthcare sector.
What Differentiates Us
We take an innovative, scientific approach to laboratory ventilation and control. Our analysis makes reasonable assumptions about how each lab room should operate. This determines the sequence of operation of the control system and sets key performance indicators that must be met in order for the lab to meet energy and performance targets. These metrics determine the amount of incentives the utilities will pay for the resulting conserved energy and also provide yardsticks against which the system can be continuously and consistently measured, assuring the claimed energy targets. Some people call this continuous commissioning.
There is no one else in the industry that can quantify energy and performance targets like we do!
We have two patents in both the US and Canada:
1. “Control systems for high containment laboratory facilities” (Biological Level 3 and 4).
We partnered with Johnson Controls in bidding on the Virology Lab in Winnipeg some years back and demonstrated the successful performance of our control systems.
2. “To calculate centrifugal fan or pump flow based on speed and pressure measurements”.
This allowed us to factory-fabricate a complete supply-and-return fan system, including all power and controls in the factory for easy on-site installation.
How Innovators Alliance Assists Us on Our Innovation Journey
We’ve been members of Innovators Alliance for over 5 years, and have found IA a useful forum to discuss common management problems, like HR, changes in legal or government regulation, and so on.
Our favourite aspects are the camaraderie, speakers on relevant topics at the meetings, and the annual Wisdom Exchange (and similar meetings which usually feature prominent speakers on timely subjects). Innovators Alliance has also brought us in touch with professionals to assist us in perplexing management problems.
