As we head into a new year, it’s a natural time for reflection and planning. For entrepreneurs, especially those leading small and medium-sized businesses, this season presents a powerful opportunity to set intentions that will guide your decisions and actions throughout 2025. These intentions are more than just goals; they’re a declaration of your focus, values, and vision for the year ahead.
Before setting intentions, evaluate the past 12-months. What worked well in 2024? What didn’t? What lessons did you learn? Try creative techniques like a reverse brainstorming session to identify solutions or create a business highlight reel celebrating key moments. These exercises provide clarity on what to build upon.
Ask yourself:
Push innovation with a vision sprint workshop. Dedicate time to brainstorming bold aspirations and use future-back planning to identify necessary steps to achieve them.
Avoid vague goals. Instead of “I want to grow my business,” specify, “I want to increase revenue by 20% by entering a new market.” Consider storyboarding your goals to visualize steps and potential roadblocks or creating a physical manifestation of your plan – something you can see and visualize every day as you work towards it.
Your Innovators Alliance network is an invaluable resource. Share your intentions and invite feedback from your chapter colleagues. Ask your Chapter Chair to let you host an upcoming meeting and use this as an Innovation Challenge where members brainstorm solutions to shared challenges. This collaboration unlocks fresh perspectives and will help you use your time most effectively.
Dream big, but ensure goals are achievable given resources and market conditions. Use scenario planning to imagine best-case, worst-case, and most likely outcomes, preparing for uncertainties while staying optimistic. Consider different perspectives as you review your plans for the year ahead. What does the hopeful optimist think will happen? What about the gloomy pessimist? Where does your plan fall on the spectrum?
Understanding your purpose fuels commitment. Ask:
The business landscape is ever-changing. Build a pivot map to outline strategies for adapting to shifts in industry or customer needs without losing focus.
Acknowledge milestones along the way. Innovate celebrations with milestone badges or awards to mark achievements and keep momentum high. Consider using your IA meetings to help you celebrate your successes each month!
Setting intentions is more than a business exercise; it’s a commitment to your vision. By reflecting, clarifying, and connecting with your community, you set the stage for a year of meaningful progress and achievement.
