Do you recall when you first started your business? Can you remember what it was like when you were just figuring things out? Every day seemed to be full of breakthroughs, accomplishments, and exciting opportunities for growth.
Then you got exactly what you wanted: You broke through, accomplished your first set of objectives, and scaled up to a meaningful and profitable level. Your business is moderately successful, but you don’t feel like you’re doing anything fresh or exciting. Stale has become the word of the day.
The Need for Business Innovation
Stale businesses can hang on for a few months or years, but they eventually fizzle out. In order to continually foster success, you need constant and sustained innovation.
Innovation is your company’s process for cultivating and executing new ideas, methodologies, workflows, products, and/or services. The purpose of the innovation is to create value for your organization. If you feel as if your business is lacking in the innovation department, something must change.
Exercising the Innovation Muscle
It’s best to think of innovation as a muscle. If you neglect it, it’ll become weak and ineffective. If you continually exercise it and provide it with the care it needs to grow, it’ll become a useful resource for your company.
The best way to overcome the challenges of innovation is to surround yourself with other people and businesses who are innovating.
This does a couple of things for you:
- It exposes you to fresh ideas and ways of thinking that you can apply within your own organization.
- It provides a peer group of like-minded individuals who will motivate you to try new things and hold you accountable for how you’re spending your time and effort.
If you don’t have people who help you exercise your innovation muscle, now’s the time to find and cultivate that community.
