Essential Management Tips for Emotional Intelligence

Power Up Your Empathy

Effective managers are good at using empathy and being sensitive to how people feel and why they feel the way they do. ‘Tune into’ and ’read’ the feelings and emotions being shared during a conversation.

Make Relevant Decisions

Effective managers may have the ability to make objective and relevant decisions. Ask yourself how the decision is relevant to corporate values and stated goals.

Be Assertive

Effective managers are adept at expressing their feelings, beliefs and views. Practice articulating your views and wishes in non-threatening situations with people you feel comfortable with. Ask for informal feedback about your delivery.

Control Impulses

Effective managers have the ability to resist or delay an impulse, drive or temptation to act. Instead of pressing ‘send’ on an unproductive reply to a provocative email, consider pressing ‘pause’ or sleeping on your response.

Remain Positive and Optimistic

Effective managers have the ability to look at the brighter side of life and maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity. Say all the things that are good or positive in a situation rather than only focusing on the negative. Language like “yes, and…” goes a lot further than “yes, but…”.
